What is your relationship with food? Who are you as an eater? Do you eat when you’re bored, lonely, or depressed? Do you use food as a reward or even as a form of punishment?

Are you consumed throughout the day with food thoughts and the scale? Have you spent the majority of your life dieting?

Gain the weight, lose the weight, gain it back. Maybe more?

Shame and guilt. Rinse, Repeat…

I founded The Metabolic Connection because I understand.

For more than 30 years the scale owned me. I didn’t know I had PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) until my 30’s. The confusion and lack of information, formed my relationship with the scale. I would weigh myself multiple times a day, even in the middle of the night. If it was down, I thought I could rule the world. If up, my day was ruined. Ruminating, loathing thoughts turned sour. That is history.

In just the last 100 years, everything about our relationship with food has changed. The “clean your plate” mentality, low-fat craze, the diet industry and social media (just to name a few) have not only changed what we eat but how we eat. Distracted, rushed, and compulsive with large portions.

Our customized 12-week program, coupled with updated bloodwork from your health care provider, is the difference.

It is…

TESTIMONIALS

The story of Hollis H.

“Eat this, not that. You can’t have that. What is she eating? Should I eat that?” These are just some of the repeated food thoughts that swirled around in my head as I went through my day especially when it came time to grocery shop or eat. Such thoughts made mealtime very stressful and unenjoyable! I needed to break the cycle, stop the thoughts, create new thoughts, and enjoy one of life’s most important gifts - FOOD!

After working with Suzy in her studio as a personal training client for over seven years, I knew that she was the perfect person to support me on my journey with my relationship with food. After all, if she could take me from not knowing how to do a push-up, to training for an hour at a time, she was certainly up for the challenge.

“There are no bad foods!” This mantra is one that Suzy and I discussed often in our sessions. Coming to realize that food is not bad, but that I can make mindful choices that are best for me, was absolutely freeing. After reflecting on who I was as an eater, I developed my own mantras to lean on based on my particular food thoughts and behaviors. My stress and anxiety began to diminish and I started to enjoy going to the grocery store, preparing meals, and breaking bread with others. Not to mention, I’m down 32 pounds! No, I’m not on a diet, trying the newest meal plan, or investing a lot of money in the newest shake. I’ve taken the time to examine my food thoughts and behaviors. I’ve come up with mantras & strategies, and I am trusting myself with my new relationship with food. -Hollis H.

The story of JESS B.

Who are you as an eater?"  This is one of the first questions Suzy asked me when we began working together about a year ago.   It seemed silly.  What does she mean?  I have struggled with my weight and relationship with food for as long as I can remember.  I even told Suzy that if I had to put a number behind it, 80% of my thoughts revolved around eating, food, and my harsh feelings toward my body.  But I had never once asked myself that question.

I wondered, who am I as an eater?

Suzy taught me to pay closer attention to my eating habits.  I started to observe how often I was turning to food.  I asked myself why.  I noticed patterns and worked with Suzy to dig deeper.  Together, we challenged years of binge and emotional eating and discovered new ways I could find comfort.  Suzy told me that once I answered these questions, the weight would start to come off.  My initial reaction... yeah, right!  But, I put my trust in her, gathered all of the patience I had in me, and we got to work.

For the first time in my life, I have lost weight without calorie counting, scale abuse, or food elimination.  Instead, I faced some of my compulsive tendencies and learned how to loosen the reins to achieve a more balanced and consistent life.   When people ask me what I've done to lose weight, I tell them I've become more mindful and intuitive.  Of course, they look at me like I have ten heads and say, "no really, what diet?"  But the truth is, Suzy's taught me that there is no such thing as "good" and "bad" foods.  I no longer have to start a new diet every Monday. I've learned to trust my body, and respect it for all that it does for me.  Suzy has helped me to evolve my internal dialogue from unforgiving to loving.  I had been so critical about my body and appearance for so much of my life, often calling myself names I'd never allow someone to call one of my friends.  Statements like "I hate myself" are now "I am a work in progress."  Through this process, I've lost the weight that had been holding me back for so long.

As it turns out, I was an emotional eater, a mindless eater, and an over-eater.   Today, I am a mindful eater.  I no longer panic at parties or turn down plans due to a fear of over-indulging.  I enjoy healthy foods, but I also know when to eat the damn cookie.  With Suzy, I have learned so much more than just who I am as an eater.  I have answered questions I would never have thought to ask myself.  I have become a much happier and healthier version of myself.  -Jess B.
